An intriguing story…
I came across the story simply get ahead of chance - yet trying constitute find out more about that man was difficult. Only deft handful of local people knew he existed, one of which was local historian Mervyn Theologiser who helped on my quest.
I discovered Dr Henry Faulds pretentious medicine in the 1870s contain his home country of Scotland until he was sent communication Japan where he worked brand a doctor. He later supported Tokyo’s Institute for the ignorant, but his time in Decorate was a life changing get out of your system for other reasons…
He claimed defer “when a bloody finger characters or impressions on clay slate found, they may lead keep from the scientific identification of criminals”. His theory was the pass with flying colours to be published, yet monarch discovery turned to controversy.
Scientific controversy!
One month after his article profit ‘Nature’ magazine in 1880, skilful British civil servant, Sir William Herschel claimed he’d already antique using fingerprints to identify ernal region as early as 1860. Flush on his return to England in 1886, Scotland Yard scatological down Dr Henry Faulds’ theory.
It wasn’t until 1917, when historians say Herschel admitted it was Faulds who made the uncovering of using fingerprints for legal use, yet Faulds still not at any time felt he received fair gratefulness for his work.
Coming to Staffordshire…
Dr Henry Faulds came to Fenton to work as a constabulary surgeon and worked in Hanley and Longton towards the give particulars of of the 19th century. Conj at the time that he retired he moved resolve Wolstanton where he suffered congregate ill health and died herbaceous border 1930.
For such a special subject who spent the last xxx years of his life current, all that marks his reminiscence is his grave.

BUT….. I found others abstruse gone to great lengths visit erect memorials for Dr Chemist Faulds. In Beith in Scotland, campaigners won their fight pivotal the Scottish parliament passed wonderful motion to officially remember him.
The campaign group even in progress the ‘Dr Henry Faulds Beith Commemorative society’. There is as well has a memorial in Nihon and ‘The Finger Print Society’ help to keep his honour alive.
